I’m very excited to have the first Persian celebration on A City Wedding today! Having photographed a Persian wedding last year, I can say these are some of the most beautiful weddings you can find — filled with family, food, culture and tons of dancing. This lovely celebration from Megan Noonan was held in Washington, D.C., though you wouldn’t know it from the gardeny venue they somehow managed to find!
From the bride: “We both grew up in the area and now live in D.C.. We love the city life and in particular Washington, D.C.. Our number one requirement for our wedding was that it be outdoors at least for the ceremony and cocktail hour. The Omni’s beautiful garden set alongside Rock Creek Park was the perfect embodiment of everything we wanted for our special day. The history of the hotel as a place to see and be seen of Washington’s “it crowd” in the early part of the 20th century gave it the Washington charm we were looking for. The outdoor setting allowed us to be creative in combining our modern lives with the ancient Iranian culture that is also so important to us.”
As we continue to feature cultural weddings, we wanted to offer some background and information on unique traditions of these celebrations. For today’s wedding, you can see photos of the “sofreh,” an elaborate floor spread including several kinds of food and decoration, all which have special meaning, which in the case of this wedding, was assembled with love and talent by the bride’s mother and two of her closest friends. A scarf is also held above the head of the new couple by unmarried female relatives, as sugar is ground over their heads by a married female relative or friend. The couple then feed one another honey, with both of these traditions representing sweetness in the marriage.
